Stacey Frechette Gymnastics Scholarship Fund
The gymnastics community suffered a great loss on February 24th 2007. Stacey Frechette, an outstanding local gymnast, died as a result of a tragic automobile accident. Stacey was a Trudeau’s team member for 10 years, a Seton Catholic high school gymnast for 6 years, and a member of the SUNY Brockport collegiate team for 1 year. Stacey was a dedicated, hard-working, graceful athlete, who loved the sport of gymnastics tremendously. She was a great teammate and friend to many in the North Country gymnastics “family”, and she will be missed more than words can say.
The Frechette family has established the Stacey Frechette Scholarship Fund. This will be awarded each year to an area high school senior gymnast who exhibits the same outstanding talent and character that Stacey possessed. If you would like to donate to this cause, please place your donation in an envelope marked “Scholarship Fund”, and leave it in the Booster Club mailbox inside Trudeau’s Gymnastics Center. We will be sure to deliver it to the Frechette family. Thank you for any contribution you may make in Stacey’s honor.
Stacey Lynn Frechette, 24, joined her beloved grandfather Melvin L. Frechette in heaven on Saturday, Feb. 24. She was born April 16, 1982, in Plattsburgh, to her loving parents, Blake and Susan (Miller) Frechette.
Stacey, although small in stature, exhibited a spirit and "spunk" for life that inspired all those around her. Her heart and love for her family and pets were the center of her world.
She graduated from Seton Catholic High School in 2000, where she was an all-star athlete in both gymnastics and volleyball. Stacey was a decorated gymnast who exhibited the courage and strength it required to overcome the fear of difficult moves. She was often asked to perform such moves for high-school pep rallies and even in parking lots; she was never hesitant to "throw it" anywhere. She was a five-time sectional and CVAC champion in gymnastics, earned five trips to the New York State Gymnastics Championships and was awarded the CVAC Sportsmanship Award in 2000. Prior to high school, Stacey represented the North Country in the 1995 Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa, during which she competed with the grace and elegance that she exhibited throughout her life. Whether competing at the state or national level, she represented her school and community in a way that her family and friends were so proud of. Her resilience and competitive nature carried her on to the collegiate level, where she successfully competed at Brockport State University until a severe back injury ended her gymnastics career.
Stacey then transferred to SUNY Potsdam in order to be closer to her family. While at Potsdam, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history, with a minor in health science. After a short time managing a local business, she realized her true calling was in teaching. She wanted to make a difference in the life of children and enrolled in the SUNY Potsdam MST master's degree program, where she completed 51 graduate credit hours in one-and-a-half years, earning a 4.0 GPA and Summa Cum Laude honors. Upon earning her teaching degree in May of 2006, Stacey began her teaching career as a permanent substitute at Chazy Central Rural School. It was here that she would meet the love of her life, and as Stacey often remarked, her "soul mate," Matthew Devins, a physical education teacher. In the summer of 2006, she earned a full-time teaching position at Mooers Elementary School, where she loved working with her students.
As an avid lover of the outdoors, she enjoyed spending time with her family, camping or just relaxing and tanning by the pool with her sister, Meghan. She also had a great love of animals, particularly her pets, Max, Benny, Aussie, Tacoma, Jetta and Jack. Stacey was a caring young woman who loved life and took advantage of every opportunity to share her energy and love with all those around her.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Stacey Frechette Scholarship Fund that will be awarded each year to an area high-school senior gymnast who exhibits the same outstanding talent and character that Stacey possessed.
